Capital Primary Health Organisation (Capital PHO) is a not for profit Trust that has brought together a number of groups committed to delivering better primary health care for the people of Wellington.
Capital PHO acknowledges the diversity of the Wellington community, socio-economically and culturally, and the breadth of health and community services that are needed to effectively identify priorities and meet needs
The focus of the Government's Primary Health Care Strategy is to reduce barriers to health care for groups with the greatest need by providing additional services, improving access and offering better support to existing first contact services. Capital PHO brings together a range of expertise offering the best chance of delivering services that reach the Maori, Pacific and low-income populations who do not enjoy excellent health status
The 32 first contact providers within Capital PHO have about 140,000 patients registered, representing a large proportion of the Wellington population - as well as many people from outside the city who seek health services here.
We have direct responsibility for a limited number of primary health care services and have established linkages with a wider group of provider stakeholders. Capital PHO has expanded the number of Non Government Organisations (NGO's) that we have a collaborative approach to providing care with, and continue to develop effective working interfaces with a range of other first line service providers in Wellington, including South East City PHO and Karori PHO
